Winnersh Bridge Project
Winnersh Business Park | Reading
Forming a pedestrian link from the nearby railway station the Winnersh Bridge, designed by Ramboll UK, creates an arresting entrance to Reading’s Winnersh Business Park.
Spanning 62 metres over five lanes of traffic the serpentine structure supports nine mature trees that run along the length of the footbridge. The trees, which help reduce surface water run-off, are contained in specially built pits with removable covers that blend seamlessly into the main deck. There is concealed pipe work for irrigation and drainage while core towers at either end provide access stairs and lifts.
Littlehampton Welding used 700 metres of quarter sections of 914 diameter tube to create the bridge which was prefabricated in 9 sections. These were then welded together on site into two half sections before lifting into position. The complete structure weighed 221 tonnes.
